Microsoft wants Yahoo! to consider a buyout, according to the New York Post.
With the shadow of Google looming over both companies, Microsoft has intensified its pursuit of a deal to take over Yahoo!, asking the company to re-enter formal talks, the paper reported on its website.
While the two companies have held informal deal talks over the years, the latest approach signals a new urgency on Microsoft's part, said the Post, citing unnamed sources.
The approach follows an offer Microsoft made to buy Yahoo! a few months ago, the paper reported, but Yahoo! spurned the advances.
The Post said Wall Street sources put a roughly $50bn price tag on Yahoo!.
According to the paper, the renewed pursuit of Yahoo! stems in part from Google's recently announced plans to buy online ad company DoubleClick, and also fits in a larger, ongoing struggle between Google and Microsoft over internet software.
Microsoft and Yahoo! could not immediately be reached for comment.
