After having received their best result ever in the Eurovision Song Contest 2008 with the Canadian singer Sirusho, the American singer Serj Tankian and his worldwide successful metal band System of a Down, has shown big interest in representing the Caucasian nation in the upcoming contest in Mother Russia.

Serj Tankian was born in 1967 in Lebanon by parents of Armenian descent, and emigrated to America at an early age. In 1995 he formed the band System of a Down, which quickly became one of the most successful alternative metal bands of modern times. Up to date, he is together with Cher one of the most famous Armenian singers in the world, and is looking forward to one day learning the Armenian language and possibly even visiting the country.

Recently during a visit in Finland, Tankain stated that he has plans to enter Eurovision for Armenia next year. He will try to follow the footsteps of other successful American singers like Anett Artani, Isis Gee and Eddie Butler, either solo or together with the rest of the members of the band.

However, Tankian also stated that if he goes to Eurovision, it will have to be under one condition. As he is one of the founders of Axis of Justice, a non-profit political activist organization fighting for recognition of the Armenian Genocide in the early 20th century, he will demand to sing a song where genocide is the main theme.

-ESC would be an excellent way to make this theme known. We must seriously think of this, said Tankian in response to a question posed by Finnish News Agency.

Previously similar themes have been tried at Eurovision with mixed success. In 1976 Greece sent the song Panaghia mou, Panaghia mou about the invasion of Cyprus, in 1993 Bosnia-Herzegovina performed Sva bol svijeta about the war in the region, and it is also believed by experts that the 1996 United Kingdom entry Ohh Ahh Just a little bit also has a hidden message about genocide.

With previous song titles such as Violent Pornography, This Cocaine Makes Me Feel Like I'm On This Song, Peephole and Fuck the System, System of a Down would perhaps be censored by the EBU rule about bad language that previously forced Silvia Night to officially change the lyrics of her song, while the EBU would probably chose to believe the political message was a reference to ancient Armenian bedtime stories or an ending relationship.

Whether Serj Tankian and System Of A Down will be the ones to represent Armenia at the next Eurovision will not be made known within the near future, but rumour has it Swiss TV are already trying to raise funds to present a higher bid to the band than Armenian Television would be capable of doing.
