Սխալվեցի Ջոյլի առաջին հաջողությունը <The stranger»-ը չէր, այն գրվել է 1977-ին:oy

1971 թվականի վերջերին Ջոյլը խնդիրներ ունեցավ Family productions լեյբլի հետ, որտեղ աշխատում էր: Նա Նյու-Յորքից ծածուկ հեռացավ Լոս-Անջելես եւ Bill Martin անունով մոտ մեկուկես ամիս աշխատեց այնտեղի «Executive room» բարում, որպես դաշնակահար: Սա էլ հիմք հանդիսացավ 1973 թվականին գրված Piano man հիթին:)
